Mattie didn’t care for much other than his sports and trying to fit in as a normal teenage boy. However, he never thought that sneaking out would lead to this. With a missing friend, a mysterious party goer, and visions he had been trying to repress for years, Mattie can’t help but feel that his life is crashing before his very eyes. But it can’t be that bad. It’s not like it’s the end of the world, right?

Maya is a 17-year-old writer who loves to write fantasy novellas. This is her third book with Story Factory’s Year of the Novella. In her spare time she likes to stare at her empty Google Docs and pretend like she’s going to finish the projects she has been promising people for too long. She’s hoping to study secondary teaching at university, and continue with her writing.

Over the course of 2023, a select group of young writers was invited to take part in a year-long writing program at Story Factory. Their goal was to produce a fully realised novella. This is one of the novellas produced in these workshops.
Year of the Novella 2023 was supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW.
This project was also made possible thanks to the support of a group of generous donors:
Rosebrook Foundation
Shand Foundation
Caroline Beecham & John Lydon
Greg Dean
Bernadette Brennan & Justin Gleeson
Deena Shiff & James Gillespie
Kim E Anderson
This publication would not have been possible without the unstinting support of the editorial and production teams at Penguin Random House. Thanks also to our all-round fantastic Story Factory volunteers. Finally, massive thanks to our typesetters, Midland Typesetters and Post Pre-press, and our printer, Griffin Press.
