The poems in Birett’s debut collection will tell you the heat of the sun, about the distance between both stars and people; in them you’ll hear the voice of a moon longing for love. And threaded through all the poems is the interplay of love and power, the craving for both, and the sense that behind both is a danger poised and waiting. Birett’s writing is willing to investigate the light and dark; in doing so it allows the reader to glimpse a ind as it plays with both hope and fear.
About Year of Poetry program: Over the course of 2019, a select group of young writers was invited to take part in a poetry writing program at the Story Factory. Their goal was to produce not just a a story, or a script, but a fully realised chapbook. This is one of the final 7 collections produced in these workshops.
